How does the minimum wage vary in the EU and where does Portugal stand?
Currently, the minimum wage in the 22 European Union (EU) member states ranges from 551 euros in Bulgaria to 2,638 euros in Luxembourg, according to Eurostat data, released on Notícias ao Minuto website.
The minimum wage in Portugal in 2025 is 870 euros per month (Eurostat divides it by 12), placing the country among those with minimum wages between 1,000 and 1,500 euros, with a value of 1,015 euros.
In the group of higher minimum wages are six member states, including Luxembourg (2,638 euros), Ireland (2,282 euros), Netherlands (2,193 euros), Germany (2,161 euros), Belgium (2,070 euros) and France (1,802).
Within the group that includes Portugal, Spain (1,381 euros), Slovenia (1,278 euros), Poland (1,091 euros), Lithuania (1,038 euros), and Cyprus (1,000 euros) are still present.
The group with the lowest minimum wage values include Croatia (970 euros), Greece (968 euros), Malta (961 euros), Estonia (886 euros), Czech Republic (826 euros), Slovakia (816 euros), Romania (814 euros), Latvia (740 euros), Hungary (707 euros), and Bulgaria (551 euros).
There are still five Member States that do not establish a minimum wage - Denmark, Italy, Austria, Finland, and Sweden.
