What are the areas of study with less likelihood of finding employment?

According to the second report of the study "Young people looking for a job registered with IEFP: Characteristics, Careers and Placements" by the Young Employment Observatory (OEJ) of ISCTE, released by Notícias ao Minuto, it is essential to make more informed educational and professional choices.

This is because, depending on the area of study, you may or may not have greater difficulty in finding employment. The data concludes that young people with higher education in the areas of Social Sciences, Commerce, and Law (41.6% of young people with university education registered with IEFP), and in Arts and Humanities (15.1%) have more difficulty in finding professional opportunities.

"The employability of this group can increase if higher education institutions promote the expansion of training areas with high demand from companies," reads the news article quoting Maria do Carmo Botelho, a teacher and researcher at ISCTE and co-author of the study. "Active employment policies should also be developed for them, namely by informing employers of the advantages of interdisciplinarity in their teams," it also reads.

Therefore, the report recommends that educational and professional choices should become more informed, with an additional effort to attract women to the fields of engineering and information technology.

The importance of this second factor lies in the fact that women represent 56.3% of young people enrolled in search of employment, as they are a group overrepresented in areas of training with greater difficulty in finding employment.

To reduce the percentage of young people struggling in the job market, the report also suggests reskilling programs in universities and polytechnics for young people to acquire different skills than those from their first experience in higher education.
