If you have been notified to pay IRS, you can pay the amount owed in installments, "after the expiry of the voluntary payment period and before the initiation of the tax enforcement process", according to information available on the Portal das Finanças.
According to DECO PROteste, on Notícias ao Minuto, taxpayers who can request installment payments include all those who "do not have other debts to the Tax Authorities and have completed the submission of the IRS declaration on time, that is, by June 30. Taxpayers who submit the automatic IRS declaration are also included."
To be able to pay the IRS in installments without the need to present a guarantee, the amount of IRS debt cannot exceed 5 thousand euros. The request must be made by September 15 (15 days after the deadline for payment), DECO explains.
"The maximum number of installments is 36. The authorized number of installments cannot result in a monthly payment lower than one quarter of the unit of account, that is, less than 25.50 euros," points out the organization.
In addition, "to waive the provision of a guarantee, the amount owed cannot exceed 5 thousand euros, in the case of individuals, and the number of installments cannot exceed 12. Depending on the amount to be paid, the total is divided into a number of monthly installments of equal value. The final installment includes the fractions resulting from rounding all of them".
