As a rule, physical money - coins and cash notes - must always be accepted by merchants. However, there are exceptions.

In 6 situations, this type of payment may be refused, according to DECO PROteste, in the Notícias ao Minuto article: Notícias ao Minuto.

"Although, as a general rule, cash payment must be accepted by merchants, the law provides for some situations in which payment with notes and coins may be refused," explains the organization.

DECO then outlines the 6 situations at stake:

• When the value of the invoice presented is not proportional to the expense being paid;

• When there is agreement between the merchant and the consumer to use another means of payment;

• When the amount to be paid exceeds 3,000 euros or its equivalent in foreign currency;

• In payments exceeding 10,000 euros, made by non-resident citizens, as long as they do not act on behalf of a legal entity;

• In tax payments exceeding 500 euros;

• In single payments with over 50 currencies. In this case, only the State or the Bank of Portugal are required to accept them.
