What should the 72-hour emergency kit recommended by the EU contain?

What should an emergency kit contain?  

Although the list may vary depending on the country, the general recommendations of the European Union include:   

Food and water

• Drinkable water for 3 days (about 4-5L per person);

• Non-perishable food items (canned goods, energy bars, cookies);

• Manual can opener.

Medical care and hygiene

• First aid kit;

• Thermometer

• Regular use medications.

• Masks and disinfectant;

• Toilet paper and wet wipes;  

Energy and communication.

• Flashlight with spare batteries. 

• Power bank charged;

• Portable radio (ideally with batteries or solar power).

• Candles and matches;

• List of emergency contacts;

Comfort and shelter

• Thermal blankets or sleeping bags;  

• Warm and waterproof clothing.

• Copies of important documents in waterproof bag;

Entertainment

• Playing cards.

In Portugal, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) subscribes to these recommendations and also suggests the inclusion of contacts of family and friends.

Where to store the kit?

Keep the kit in a dry, easily accessible and well-known location for all family members. A durable backpack or box with a lid is recommended. It is also useful to have a smaller version in the car.  

Additional preparation

The European Commission also proposes regular simulation exercises and the integration of emergency preparedness in school curricula, to ensure that new generations are also prepared.
