From 2026, all vehicle owners will have new rules for paying the Single Circulation Tax (IUC). The measure was announced by the Government during a joint press conference of the Finance and Economy ministers, after the Council of Ministers - read on Notícias ao Minuto (https://www.noticiasaominuto.com/auto/2708674/iuc-deixa-de-ser-pago-no-mes-da-matricula-e-passa-a-existir-prestacoes?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=linkinbio&utm_campaign=2708674).
The tax, popularly known as "car stamp", will no longer be paid in the month corresponding to the registration of the vehicle. Instead, there will be a single date for all taxpayers.
According to the Government, if the value of IUC is up to 100 euros, the payment will be made in full in February. For amounts over 100 euros, the tax will be divided into two equal installments, paid in February and October.
Currently, the IUC is settled in the month the vehicle was registered, which has caused problems for many taxpayers. "Many people forget the month they bought the car, whether new or second-hand, resulting in delays and fines," explained the Minister of Finance, Miranda Sarmento.
The new model aims to simplify the process and avoid forgetfulness. The measure will only come into effect in 2026, and the Vehicle Tax will be calculated based on the vehicle owner at the end of the previous year to the due tax.
