Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly: When can it be suspended or terminated?

These are the cases in which CSI can be suspended or terminated.

In 2025, the first "enhanced" Elderly Solidarity Supplement (CSI) was already paid, with an increase of 30 euros (an increase that came into effect this year).

Support is paid to "elderly people of low resources", aged at least 66 years and 7 months and residing in Portugal. There is an exception for disability pensioners who "do not have a minimum age to apply for the pension" and "can apply for the CSI, except if they are beneficiaries of the Social Inclusion Benefit", as explained by Social Security on its website, as cited by Notícias ao Minuto.

One concern that is raised is: When can this support be suspended or even terminated? First, it can be suspended in the following cases: 

• The elderly's resources exceed the established limit.

• The elderly person does not report to Social Security the changes that have occurred to the composition or income of the family unit.

• Do not communicate change of residence to foreigners.

• Penalty of deprivation of liberty;  

• Not fulfilling any of their obligations.

Note that in case of suspension, "the payment of the CSI is suspended from the following month" in which the indicated events occurred and is "restarted in the following month after the situation is resolved".  

It can be finished in these situations:  

• Passing of 2 years from the start of a suspension.

• If it is found that the beneficiary made false statements;

• The beneficiary has passed away.

In addition, "the beneficiary is entitled to the benefit for the month in which they die, regardless of the day of the month on which the death occurs," as shown in the news article.
