How does this scam with the multibanco card work?

Scammers are operating in supermarkets, especially in self-service payment areas. They take advantage of customers' distraction to observe the PIN code and, in a moment of carelessness, swap the real card for a fake one - without the victim realizing it immediately.

Where do these frauds occur?

The authorities report frequent incidents in crowded supermarkets and urban areas with high traffic. The method is discreet, fast, and difficult to detect, making the scam particularly dangerous.

How to avoid falling for this scam?

  • Protect your PIN code: Always cover the keypad when entering the code;
  • Check the card after payment: Confirm that you have your own card and not a similar one.
  • Beware of approaches: Stay alert to strangers trying to distract or engage in conversation while you're paying.

What to do if you are a victim?

If you suspect you have been targeted by this scam:

Immediately block the card through your bank's support line.

- File a complaint with the authorities with as much detail as possible;

The role of the Judiciary Police
