Almost 26 thousand young people have already requested total or partial exemption from the Municipal Tax on Onerous Property Transactions (IMT) and Stamp Duty when buying a house. In total, 18,213 homes were purchased under this measure.
The average price of purchased houses was approximately 189 thousand euros, resulting in a total acquisition volume of over 3.4 billion euros.
The information was provided by the newspaper Público, based on data from the Ministry of Finance, indicating that the accumulated amount of tax benefits granted already exceeds 100 million euros — 75.3 million euros for the Young IMT and 26.4 million euros for the Young Stamp Duty.
IMT Jovem was implemented last August and has a specific table for beneficiaries. It includes four tiers, ensuring total exemption for properties in the first tier and applying an 8% rate on the part of the value that exceeds this limit.
With the update of the IMT brackets in the State Budget for 2025 (OE2025), the maximum exemption amount has increased to 324,058 euros, seven thousand euros more than in 2024. Meanwhile, the portion subject to the 8% rate has increased to 648,022 euros (compared to 633,453 euros in the previous year).
To benefit from this exemption, young people must not have owned properties in the three years prior to the purchase and must be up to 35 years old at the time of signing.
